International Women's - Day Break the Bias

Journey to a new generation

“Over the years, the role of women in society was seen as secondary, yet women have always been the ones bringing up the new generation of men; men who in time looked back and acknowledged the influence their mothers had in their early development and the effect their mothers had on their own growth as men who excelled in their area of expertise.

We live in times when the role of women in society is acknowledged more than ever and by celebrating this, we ensure the place women have in our lives remains pivotal.

In times like these, when we watch Ukrainian women leaving behind the homes they built, carrying their children, with arms that never seem to get tired, even after days of traveling, enduring fear, cold, hunger and uncertainty; these women don’t break down, they pick themselves and their children up, with strength and courage, the type of strength and courage we only ever  see in movies or read about in novels, but it is the type of strength and courage we all have inside us.

Everything women bring to the world: their power to bring forth life, creativity, beauty, gentleness, strength; their caring nature and busy hands in action; the women’s togetherness is an explosion of colour and joy, of cultures and traditions from around the globe gathered into a tapestry of exquisiteness.

Tech is a very creative industry; the level of innovation and applicability requires the dynamism women have. No offense to men; women have a sense of urgency and ability to distribute their attention to a range of solutions, implications, options in a very short time this is why their skills are complemented by the skills men in the industry have; we need role models everywhere.

When I was a young girl, I always wanted to be a doctor and studied up to the age of 16 towards that. A life event shifted things and my academic studies took a different turn when I decided to follow the Economic career path.

On this journey I was an academic Olympian at Maths and Economics in High school, then on through to university, where Economic Studies was the natural journey, I specialised in banking and stock exchange with accountancy as a core subject.

The year I graduated, I moved to London and was employed as accounts assistant. The Finance Director I worked for was an amazing woman; to this day I am inspired by her passion for the job.

My first Christmas in London was spent in the office, working to help her finalise the company’s financial year end before the actual year was ending. That Christmas will always stay with me as the one where I understood that working in Accounts is more about investigative work and finding solutions than counting the money as some might think.

From then to now, I followed a natural job progression intertwined with further training as part of the Association of Accounting Technicians, then back to university studying Strategic Management and Leadership and joining the Chartered Management Institute.

It was never a chase for a goal as FD; I enjoyed each chapter and gave my best everywhere I worked, learning new things, applying myself and most importantly meeting amazing people along the way, that helped shaped me as a professional ...that journey is not over; there are new challenges and new adventure all the time.”

- Diana Stroia, Financial Director at Comcen

Believe to achieve

Nicola Cox, Senior Account Manager gives her thoughts on the importance of International Women’s Day.

“Global holiday that recognizes women’s incredible achievements, raises awareness, and encourages others to advocate for gender equality'

According to PWC only “3% of females say a career in technology is their first choice.” Pwc – Women in Tech.

“International Women's Day is very encouraging to remind us that there is no limit on what we want to achieve” – Ashleigh McLean, Sales Support.

Having worked in the industry for the last 31 years, so much has changed. From customer requirements to technology itself. I have had to adapt and move forward with the times, some of the times being really challenging, but most of all, being exciting and rewarding. These years have turned me into the person I am today, hardworking and determined to succeed.”

When asked what advice you would give your younger self.

“To believe more in myself!” Sharon Hawkins, Senior Account Manager

Opportunities

At Comcen and Pisys.net women play a huge role in the day to day running of the company, from engineers, sales managers, purchasing, financial, marketing, and directors.

“There are opportunities at Comcen and Pisys.net for women, most our women are managers, directors and in finance.

Technology is advancing on a higher scale from the pandemic to be able to adapt to hybrid working, and the increase of media usage worldwide."

– Angela Morris, Purchase Ledger Controller

All Women are Equal

Women can be just as successful as men in my role. Building knowledge, equal pay across the board, we can achieve anything where possible.”

Following an education and career in technology can lead to many employment avenues.

“Between working in IT and flying light aircraft for fun I’ve always been outnumbered by the boys… It’s not for want of skills or interest when people get the chance to try – all the women I’ve worked with or flown with have been fab, but you have to see someone out there doing well in a role to know that it’s a role that a) even exists and b) that’s a role that “people like you” you could do. – Can’t be what you can’t see. We’re always fighting a skills shortage in tech and IT so failing to recruit adequately from literally half the population helps no one! We have to fix that.”

- Leia Fee, Fast Response Engineer at Pisys.net

Celebrating Gender Equality

International Women’s Day is not only to celebrate women’s achievements in social, economic, and political environments, but to celebrate gender equality. “How fitting it is that a day has been created for Women. We have a lot to celebrate. Every Women’s Success is an inspiration to another, we are strong when we are there for each other!!!!

It is important that Woman work within the Tech Industry to promote the opportunities available and encourage more ladies in this field. I have worked in different areas of industry from Manufacturing, Retail to my current role in Finance, from when I started work from 16 (years of age) have seen a huge difference in the way women have been perceived, the opportunities which are now available. I started work in the late Seventies when almost all Managerial Positions were held by men, to see the change over the years with women taken ownership through ability and extreme hard work to gain recognition has been inspirational.

The pressure on Working Women is a constant Balancing Act, family commitments, childcare yet Women continue to produce excellent working results, Women should be proud of all their achievements.

What advice would you give your younger self?

"Not to be so timid, grasp opportunities without fear of failure, believe in yourself.”

Angela Morris, Purchase Ledger Controller

Anyone can be

“I have twin girls, and bringing them up alongside my son, I have an ‘anyone can be and do anything that they want to be…
In the past, tech was a male dominated industry and gender equality is important to ensure there are no barriers to success and to pave the way for our children to work in any industry they choose.

I was given a chance in an industry I had no idea about, Comcen gave me confidence in myself and let me develop new skills.”

What advice would you give your younger self?

“Don’t doubt yourself, you got this!”

- Vikky Wintersgill-Taylor, Senior Account Manager

Respect

During our morning meeting #BreakTheBias on International Women’s Day, it became evident the women working at Comcen feel a lot of trust towards the men at Comcen, and feel they are respected and worked with as professionals rather than gender.

“The men at Comcen respect us” Diana Stroia, Financial Director

Although times are forever changing towards a more equal world, there are many cultures that share different values on the equality of women where some women do not have equal rights or equal treatment.

The meeting brought to light how much appreciation and value women here feel, and how important it is to empower other women around the world.

Women have gained confidence in being more independent and vocal in their thoughts and feelings.

“Women don’t need to rely on men” | “I’m your lover not your mother”  - Angela Morris,  Purchase Ledger Controller

"All the people at Comcen and Pisys.net have been welcoming and respectful to everyone else. Everyone's door is open, all Directors are approachable and everyone tries to help. It isn't uncommon to see the Directors packing boxes and sorting deliveries to help." - Rebecca Ling, Marketing Coordinator

The Importance of Support Networks

Lockdown turned everyone’s bellies into an anxious butterfly that still appears when asked out on a large social event. Through the hard times it was made more apparent how important having a support network is.

“It made relationships stronger through lockdown.

Most of the customers we speak to are men, and from having years of experience you build trust, respect, and relationships.”

Technology is not the only industry where women are gaining interest, women are wanting to build, engineer, be on the frontline, and to voice their opinions.

- Karen Kenny, Senior Account Manager
